Wallumatta Legal, a not-for-profit family law service pioneered by DLA Piper, has expanded to Victoria in partnership with Melbourne Law School. Originally launched in NSW with Macquarie University, the firm assists the “missing middle” who don’t qualify for legal aid but cannot afford private representation. Inspired by the DC Affordable Law Firm in the U.S., Wallumatta Legal offers fixed-fee, unbundled services, prioritizing accessibility. With financial backing from major law firms and a Victorian Legal Services Board grant, the new Melbourne office will provide legal aid while offering law students hands-on experience. The initiative aims to scale its model nationwide.
