Wallumatta Legal, a not-for-profit law firm, was launched on 2 May 2022 through a collaboration between global law firm DLA Piper and Macquarie University. It was established to address the significant unmet need for family law services in Australia, particularly for the ‘missing middle’—those who don’t qualify for Legal Aid but can’t afford private lawyers.
Based in Sydney, Wallumatta Legal offers low and fixed-fee pricing to improve access to justice. Macquarie Law School students can gain hands-on experience at the firm, learning to deliver tech-driven legal services.
The firm’s long-term vision is to expand across Australia and the region, demonstrating that its model can be self-sustaining and replicated in other areas of law. During its initial two-year pilot, it will not provide pro bono services to test the model’s viability.
